Bishopsgate Ward Team Secures Removal of Bishopsgate's Temporary Barriers
Updated: Feb 13
After the Bishopsgate Ward Team lobbying of Transport for London (TfL) and a productive exchange with Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance, TfL has now confirmed that Bishopsgate’s unsightly temporary covid barriers will be removed, with work beginning this spring.
Since the pandemic, the large blue plastic barriers and tarmac pavement extensions have caused disruption, restricting pedestrian flow and creating confusion for cyclists. While these measures were initially necessary, it is clear they have outlived their usefulness and no longer align with the high-quality built environment expected in the City.
I wrote to the Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, urging TfL to prioritise a permanent, high-quality solution that serves both pedestrians and cyclists. In response, he has now confirmed that TfL will start removing the temporary barriers and replacing them with semi-permanent footways while also addressing drainage issues. This work will take place overnight to minimise disruption and is expected to be completed within a couple of months. Furthermore, TfL is developing plans for a fully permanent scheme, which will be subject to public consultation.
Deputy Mayor Dance told us:
> “TfL will start removing the temporary blue barriers and replacing them with semi-permanent footways, as well as addressing some identified drainage issues. This will begin this spring and is expected to take a couple of months (and planned to take place overnight to minimise disruption).”
We are delighted with the results of the Bishopsgate Ward team’s lobbying, working to ensure that the City’s urban realm reflects the highest standards. TfL officers will continue to engage with the Corporation as the long-term plans for Bishopsgate develop, and have secured a commitment that we will be consulted throughout the process.
The transformation of Bishopsgate is now in motion. With the barriers set to be removed and long-term improvements on the horizon, I am proud to have played a key role in making this happen.
