CITY OF LONDON: ACCESS TO FINANCE FOR EARLY-STAGE SMES
Updated: Jan 30
The City of London Corporation has been actively working to support the growth and success of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as a key part of our recovery plan following the pandemic.

Did you know that SMEs account for 98% of all businesses in London? They cover a broad spectrum of industries and include businesses of varying sizes—from pre-start and start-up stages to micro, small, and medium enterprises, as well as freelancers. In the UK as a whole, there are approximately 5.5 million businesses, with fewer than 10,000 classified as large. Many of these larger businesses are based right here in the City of London. That's why SME finance matters.
Helping SMEs scale and thrive is vital for the City of London’s economic future. As a prominent convening authority, we’ve been exploring solutions to challenges like accessing funding, particularly for early-stage SMEs looking to expand their horizons.
On 20th February 2025, small businesses will have an exciting opportunity to pitch in front of a live audience at Guildhall. Indie Love Gordon and the 40% Club will host a pitching competition during the Business Showcase and Networking portion of the event.
Indie Gordon, a seasoned entrepreneur and angel investor with extensive industry connections, is teaming up with us to provide entrepreneurs at the conference with a valuable chance to refine their pitching skills. Participants will receive constructive feedback and compete for exciting prizes, including £500 vouchers, three months of free Canva Premium, and one month of complimentary business mentoring. This is an excellent opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to practice in a supportive setting and learn how to elevate their SME finance pitches!
