Father Chris Vipers
Priest, St Mary Moorfiels
Simon Burrows, a member of the Bishopsgate ward team, visits St Mary Moorfields Church in Eldon Street to speak with Father Chris, who has been priest at the church for nine years.
About St Mary Moorfields:
• The only Roman Catholic church in the City of London (Square Mile).
• Originally established in 1820 but relocated to its current building in 1901 due to the expansion of the Metropolitan Line.
• Open 12 hours a day (7:30 AM - 7:30 PM), offering two daily services:
• 8:00 AM (for commuters)
• 1:00 PM (lunchtime service)
A Welcoming Community
Father Chris describes the church as a democratic space, welcoming everyone from CEOs to cleaners, commuters to tourists, and local residents. People come to pray, reflect, and find peace throughout the day, with many simply sitting down to take a break from city life.
Ministry and Partnerships
• The church serves the entire Square Mile, supporting workers, residents, and visitors.
• Strong interfaith collaboration, including a close relationship with St Botolph’s Anglican Church in Bishopsgate.
• A key focus of Father Chris’s work is listening—providing a neutral, open space for people to talk and share their concerns.
Changes Since COVID-19:
• Pre-pandemic, weekday services were much busier, with Fridays being the busiest day.
• Now, footfall has shifted, and Thursday has replaced Friday as the city’s main social night.
• The City of London is evolving, and St Mary Moorfields remains a constant place of support and reflection for all.
Father Chris welcomes everyone to visit the church at any time. Whether for a service, a quiet moment, or simply a place to pause in the city, St Mary Moorfields is always open.
